In bushwick brooklyn there is a park named Maria Hernandez park that was once named Bushwick Park. This park was renamed after Maria Hernandez in 1989 after she was murdered by drug dealers because she stood up for her neighborhood fighting against the drug dealers in her block. Maria use to organize block parties and community gatherings to evict the drug dealers from the community but on August 8, 1989 she was shot 5 times through her window in her Bushwick apartment on Star St. RIP Maria Hernandez. As a kid i grew up in the neighborhood of bushwick i lived several blocks away from Maria Hernandez park but i knew the park as Knickerbocker Park with nothing but crack heads and dope phenes that roamed like zombies robbing people shooting up drugs and bullets, murder was in the air like every week that was in the 90's tho today it's improved so much the neighborhood and the park. The park won an honor in December 2006 for park of the month. Now 2011 the city park commissioner adrian benepe is partnering up with Bryant Park Corp. President Daniel Biederman to invest lots of money to upgrade the park. They even came up with $100,000 to plant elaborate FLOWER GARDENS at all four entrances i mean thats good and all but the only thing thats going to come out of that is that the flowers will be stollen and placed inside the apartments of some commutes just like the movable chairs they placed in the park so people can sit anywhere they feel like, Now those chairs are out the park no where to be found and any money bet the same movable chairs from the park are inside the apartment's of some commuters in bushwick (lol). The good thing is the kids will have more things to do for the summer like programs involving theatre with the new stage they built and what ever else they have planned. Good things come to those who wait. Right.
